Here's an interesting new poll from Harris Interactive about who throws out the aluminum cans with the rest of the garbage.
Harris Recycling Poll
Some highlights:
Those in the East and West are more likely to recycle (88% and 86% respectively). One-third (32%) of those in the South as well as three in ten (30%) of those in the Midwest, however, say they recycle nothing.
Three-quarters (77%) of American adults recycle something in their own home, one-quarter (23%) still recycle nothing at all. One may think that the younger generation is the one most likely to recycle, but this is not the case. Three in ten (30%) Echo Boomers (those aged 18 to 30) recycle nothing, compared to 19 percent of Matures (those aged 62 and older).
Among those who do not recycle, the reasons are very varied. One in six (15%) say they do not recycle because it is not available in their area while 12 percent each say it takes too much effort and it costs more to recycle where they live. Just one in ten (11%) say they do not recycle because they don’t believe it makes a difference while six percent say they are too busy and five percent say it is too difficult.

It blows my mind that there are still people who don't bother to recycle. It does help to have a municipality that has made the commitment to curbside recycling as part of their pickup program. We have that here. In fact, it's so easy, you just dump your recyclables into the blue bin and set it out. Done. You don't even have to sort plastic from glass from newspaper, and yet, I still note on trash days the absence of blue bins at every other house. Sigh...
I don't know. I guess we can continue to try to share the information we have and be part of creative solutions wherever we can and hope that the collective effort is having some sort of beneficial impact.
Along those lines, I wanted to pass along a heads-up about Blog Action Day. If you haven't heard about it, it's a non-profit initiative to get the international blogging community to unite for one day — October 15th, 2007 — to devote their respective blogs to the subject of the environment. Word is traveling: I heard it from a fellow houseblogger, I blogged about it, and a quick Google search shows that lots of other bloggers (with all sorts of interests) are doing the same. Here's the link to the organizers' website for more information: http://www.blogactionday.org
