"Green" roof too expensive

Well, turns out the green option, the recycled metal roof, is just too expensive, about $7,000 over our budget. It cost $22,800 to do our 1400 sq foot house! At first I was heartbroken, but I guess I have to choose my battles. Get a normal roof, then save up for solar panels and spend some more money on energy efficiency projects. When you are on a budget, you really can't win them all.

Hi there. I stumbled across your blog and would love to talk with you about options for your metal roof. I am a manufacturer of metal roofing and may have some ideas to help you get that metal roof after all if you are still in the market. You can email me at tmiller@classicroof.com

Hi Todd. I appreciate the thought, but if you are suggesting financing, such as that offered by GE (which your installer suggested), we aren't interested. We pay for all of our home improvements in cash-- we have no home loans and plan to keep it that way! I would love a Classic roof, but I'm old fashioned. If I can't pay cash, I can't afford it.

Hey there. We are new bloggers! We had the same dilemma on our 1400sq ft ranch. We were not going into debt for a metal roof, so we got a pure-white asphalt shingle roof (energy star certified). Also, we "splurged" on a Solube-brand skylight (also energy star certified) for our guest bathroom which otherwise would have no natural light and thus would require electricity 24/hrs a day. All this for around 5K.
